JOBCORPS: A tale of horror.

JOBCORPS:JUST SAY NO!
For those of you who do not know, Jobcorps is a federally funded "educational" training program for 16 through 24-year-olds. They provide "room&board", a monthly stipend, as well as a vocational training program and education classes. I use all of these terms loosely, as they do. Read on for why.
I would ONLY recommend jobcorps to someone who has NO OTHER CHOICE. Jobcorps is a scam. The recruiters tell you out and out LIES to get you in. I was a good student the entire 6 months I was there, but it seemed like no matter what you did, you never made a 5 (top daily marks). I always received good marks in class, but as I left on time to go in the morning, and my slacker roommates did not, we never got a good room score. It caused me to lose my weekends and my pay, as well as store run privileges and recreational trips.
In college I am a straight A student, on the Dean's list for the second year in a row. You do not get to be there if you are a screw up.
The stipend is the hugest false advertisement ever, a bald face lure, a $25 bi-weekly check (that I fully believe they only offer so they can say that they pay students to attend, considering how many ridiculous ways they have to whittle it down to $0 before you get it in hand). The recruiters and staff will never tell you how much it is before you enter, they play it off that it differs, so they can't say, etc...not true. It varies between $25-$50. No higher. You can offer to play janitor cleaning an entire building every night and bring your total up an additional $40 a check. They can just decide you didn't do good enough and not pay you if they choose, too. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.
Everything you do wrong is blown out of proportion, even when you couldn't avoid it. Out in the world I am NEVER a trouble maker, I never got arrested, never got disciplined at work, was never late for anything. I have been the voice of reason to MOST people I know, in JC and outside, keeping THEM from doing stupid stuff, too. But it seemed like there was no way to just be a human being at jobcorps. NO individuality was accepted. If you dared to question a rule that made no sense, whether you followed it or not, you were "disciplined". Discipline includes either being restricted to jobcorps, or having your measly bit of pay fined. It is true, you get paid $25 EVERY TWO WEEKS, when you are at your "job"(classes) 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday. That's .33 cents am hour. SLAVE WAGES. Minimum wage when I was there was $7 an hour. That would have been $560 per check, before taxes. Which you wouldn't have to pay, as you make far below the "poor" standard. Okay, say you want to include room and board? Figure that a room at a boarding house is 100 a week, that's 400 a month for a ROOM to yourself, with a shared kitchen and bath. Here you are forced to share a room with 3 other individuals, partitioned by short 3 foot walls between each bed. So I would say that's too much, but we'll go with it for example purposes. Also say you pay $200 a month for food, which is RIDICULOUSLY high, as the food they provided were low quality bulk-bought food. If they were paying $200 a month per student, with 300 students...I'd laugh my ass off. Food would have been AWESOME. That'd be 60k a month on food. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO USE SPICES!!! *GASP!* Yeah, situation not likely. Yet, once again, for this example, we will go with it.
So total that would be room and board expenses of $600 a month per student right? Now at minimum wage, you would STILL have been left with $260 a paycheck($520 a month). NOT $$50 a month. It is also highly illegal for them to withhold your pay for behavioral issues. This is not an ALLOWANCE, it is a PAYCHECK. You have to cash them there. And they will not give you your full amount if there is a fine, they keep it, without permission. You cannot choose not to pay and accept the consequences. Imagine: if that were LEGAL, there would be no cars towed for parking tickets, and that stupid parking wars show wouldn't exist.
No matter what job you have, it is ILLEGAL for employers to withhold pay if you were present for your shift, whether you did any work or not.
I would also like to point out that they care not about medical issues, ALSO ILLEGAL. I had to go to the med center and hospital ER for a serious injury to my calf muscle. The doctor said to stay off it and keep it elevated due to severe bruising and internal bleeding which caused it to swell. The good medical staff at Jobcorps would not allow me to follow doctors orders, and forced me to go to class anyways or risk ejection. This caused further injury to my leg, as there is nowhere to keep your leg elevated in class, and in Culinary you have to walk constantly. My muscle, instead of just being bruised, was TORN instead. I was in pain and on crutches for a month. I realize now I should have sued, but at the time if I had gotten thrown out, I would have been homeless, as you cannot save money when you make $25 every 2 weeks.
Jobcorps is WORSE than a prison. Even a prison respects medically documented injuries and doctors orders.
Here are some of the worse offenses of JC:
-People stole things all the time. All you had was a small closet you could lock, which staff "inspected" DAILY. Not to mention if you grabbed the handle and shook the door, it unlocked. REAL SAFE.
-If someone was beating on someone else, and they defended themselves, BOTH people were ejected from the place, no investigation was inducted, and no eyewitness testimony was accepted.
-The ENTIRE place would go on "lockdown" every time there was an incedent between a couple people, usually two individuals fighting. Even when they knew who did it and were right there. No matter what time it was. If it was 3pm, you were locked in the dorms for the entire night, and couldn't leave until 5am. THAT'S 14 HOURS.
- People were terminated for NO CAUSE, ALL THE TIME. I myself was terminated for "throwing eggs all over campus", NOT something I would ever consider doing, when 8 individuals were present to vouch for my whereabouts the time in question. AS WERE CAMERAS at the rec hall... it didn't matter though, because the day before I had completed my trade, and they didn't need me anymore. Once you complete trade, they have to pay for services for YOU, like assistance with job placement, assistance finding housing, and $1200 towards apartment furnishings/rent....but not if they terminated you first. I saw this happen SO MANY TIMES, it cannot be considered even remotely coincidental.
-The curfew for 21 year old adults who were responsible was the same as for 16 year old delinquents. 8 pm. If you were not in by then, you were locked out, and had to knock for entry, even if it was by 1 minute, and were written up, fined, and put on restriction.
-There were recreational outings every week, and only lv 5 students could go. If you had a slob of a roommate, you couldn't. Whether it was your fault or not. Same was true for "store runs", whether you needed shampoo and soap or not. ONLY 10-20 PEOPLE COULD GO, depending on how many vans they took. OUT OF 300 PEOPLE. If you weren't on time for the sign up, or didn't know anyone going, you couldn't even get your necessities, unless you could pay one of the people going to get your things, an EXORBITANT price, without the staff catching you.
-The food was terrible, and if I hadn't of been in culinary, I would never have eaten. The chicken was RAW, still bloody inside, every other day. I survived on sandwiches, which I cooked in the microwave because they left the meat out for an hour and a half at a time.
-A Jobcorps education,("Hey it's free education! Don't be so damn negative!!!" That's one of the points defenders use... free or not, IS NOT RESPECTABLE, employers frown upon it on a resume, and it is therefore useless.) Nobody, in my experience, wants anyone trained there. I have heard of people hiring JC trainees, but not anywhere respectable. Because of the MANY degenerates that attend, it is viewed as a place for criminals and poor employees. Jobcorps employees themselves I have seen quoted in newspapers saying "Jobcorps is a training program for "at risk" youth." The stigmata is insurmountable. Even with a letter of recommendation from my instructor. I tried for MONTHS to get a job at a restaurant, even as a bus person, and the second employers found out I was trained there, the employers faces dropped. I never got a job at a restaurant, even though I was serve-safe certified and attended bar-tending school after, out of pocket. I was forced to get a job at a gas station to feed myself, and a second job at Walmart to pay for other needs. I am in college now, and have a sales job with a respectable company through my own merit,(AND by not mentioning JC in my resume) and am getting a REAL education, so I can get a better job in the future...a JC education is, by-and-large, a waste of time.
I fully expect that Jobcorps should be subject to regular inspections and reviews. MANY of their practices are unconstitutional and illegal. I fully believe that the IDEA of Jobcorps is a good one....but when you allow people power with no real supervision, things never go as planned.
DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE YOU CARE ABOUT TO ATTEND THIS HELLHOLE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE BEHAVIORAL ISSUES. THEY WILL COME OUT A WORSE PERSON FOR IT.

I have never heard of Job Corps. Now I have to research it. Sounds disgusting!
This is a program that has received tons of money from the federal government! I am now outraged! Please put in an explanation of what Job Corps is, for people like me, who knew nothing about it! This is outrageous!
Thank you! Perfect!
I just got screwed over here. i went to the medina one for carpentry. i completed the trade. and i was told, if you get into college or find a job, after u comeplete trade u can leave. So i just got a job at tops, and signed up for college and got in. Now they tell me i wont get my money, and they wont bring me to my job. they also have $200 of my dollars from working, which i cant get back.... THIS IS THE WORST PLACE TO GO..... DONT SEND ANYONE THERE.
Yeah... You know what, they say a zero tolerance area and everyone is safe...
I went to Columbia Basin Job Corps and they fucked me over. Sure, I was a great student there but you know what?
There was a guy there who was sexually harrassing me, and I reported him, they told us to avoid each other than he started stalking me...
You know what's worse about that? I reported him again and they didn't do anything about it.
He decides to get hired on as an RSM, I was already an RSM... So I talk to the Rec Staff and he said he'd fire him. The next week this boy is still on the schedule and I decided I had enough and I left.
Don't get me started on the teachers, they say equal oppurtunity but damned if you have add or ADHD they bitch you out for being too loud during class...
I told my teacher over and over again that I in order for me to learn her material (Because she said she wanted us to learn it the best way we could) that I need to have some fun with it... But she expected me to sit and READ and not have fun during class...
Oh and I also had a miscarriage while I was there... The Clinic staff told me that I was blowing things out of proportion...
Well, everyone I asked about it told me yep, that sounds like a miscarriage...
Anyways, done ranting... Job Corps is a horrible place and I refuse to send anyone there... I don't even want my brother going there and he's thinking about it!
Wow, you people are really annoying. I currently attend the Colbran Job Corps program, and although it is not the best thing in the world, it does its job in preparing me to be successful in the real world. I used to sell drugs and smoke weed all day, without a care in the world, until life smacked me in the face. What you don't realize is that I attend THE BEST Job Corps in the country. You Probably attended some shit hole that wishes they could be like CJC (not to be confused with the jail) I will admit that sometimes I wish I could leave, that I could go home and do what i wanted when I wanted, but how would that help me learn to structure myself? Spend my time wisely for work and play. How to correctly behave if I dislike someone, instead of trying to beat their ass. The problem you had was this, you didn't research what job corps was really like, and you sure as hell didn't research what YOUR job corps was like. It is a federally funded program, and they pay you to stay there. Why the fuck would they pay you minimum wage, when you are learning for FREE. sure, high school is free, but can you do it in 2 years? NO I currently take classes that would cost me close to 3 grand per class for FREE. The government pays YOU to learn for FREE. They give you a place to sleep and feed you FOR FREE. WHY? all in hopes that you will become a successful individual who ends up paying TAXES, and guess what, 40+ years of working and paying taxes more than makes up for the 30+ thousand they spend on EACH student a year. Let me give it to you straight. If you want to go to job corps, dont go to the ones that have staff weraing BPV's becvause they are afraid of there own students, obviously they do not have it right there, how they continue to operate is beyond me. Go to a NICE well working job corps, the one I am at is the BEST in the COUNTRY they are so good at what they do OTHER CENTER DIRECTORS come to OURS to see how they can change THEIRS for the better... we get paid, it starts at 17.00 every two weeks and then works it way up to 47.03 after 6 months. There are other way to make money as soon as you prove to them you are commited, would you have 2 grand to someone you barely know? neither would they... Also, dont think this is summer camp. This is an alternative center where you must learn to be JOB READY at all times. You must tuck in your shity at ALL TIMES you must not cuss you must not run around and horseplay, all of these things can get you written up and lose points (which can greatly affect how awesome or shitty your stay is depending on your actions and attitude) and room scores are stupid, that does not exist, instead they have "dorm" scores, where you clean for an hour in the morning, before voc training, and then they score your results, if you do horribly as a whole dorm, then you clean again for another hour that same day, nothing keeps you from going out on movie trips or swimming trips or hiking trips or white water rafting UNLESS you get written and points are taken away. its really that simple, dont fuck up and you are highly rewarded, continue to break the rules and you get to do nothing your whole stay or until they kick you out. job corps is not that bad, you just didn't go the right one. I am going to leave this place with my CompTIA A+ cert, my network+ Cert and possibly my CCENT Cert, along with completions from my trade.
moral of the story, do not just listen to one review of one place out of the 400 in the country, learn to research before you do anything, knowledge is power and power can get you pretty much anything.
so true what this girl has said...im being fucked over as we speak caNT get my drivers license for sum odd reason, but im being booted with a permit instead...which is great to sum point...but i asked for an extension on my time at JC AHEAD OF TIME to get these "Required things" done but nope...prolly because i had to many write ups? i never attended the REQUIRED CTP stage to help me with these things...i attended Ouachita JC in AR cant believe i had to ride a bus from Louisiana to AR just to get fukd....email me if anyone can tell me what i did wrong dhayter927@gmail.com
damn just admit that job corps is shitty and you know it. you sound like a after school special and there paying you to speak
I attended the Treasure Island Job Corps center in San Francisco years ago. Even though the living situations were shitty, I still had fun. Drugs and sex and all that fun stuff, right in the middle of the bay area!
The training was non existant. None of the classes were accredited. Teaching staff were nice enough, but lacked the skills to call themselves teachers. The security and dorm staff were a joke. The food was deplorable. Fights happened all the time, sometimes over things as petty as cigarette debts. My time at job corps trained me for county jail more than anything else.
But I still had fun. It's not really a place to learn. It's a place to take a few moments before you make an actual move with your life. Pursue school, pursue work.
But if your at job jail, pursue some fun. Your not there to learn. No matter what the commercials try to tell you

It was hell...The day I left I had accidentally left a few of my things there. So I call them up and notify them about that, and let them know that I'm on my way.. Now when I first called them and explained to them the situation, they then told me that my things were there and that I could go on campus and grab my belongings.. So my mother and I leave for job corps. We get there they tell us that my things are there, but then two minutes later they tell my mom that they don't know what stuff I'm talking about.. We sat there for an hour straight dealing with there BS telling me that my things aren't there when on the phone they said different! So after arguing with them for an hour I never got my belonging back... THANK YOU JOB CORPS YOU KICKED ME OUT AND STOLE MY BELONGINGS!!
I would NEVER EVER EVER recommend this to anyone, and I advise you to NEVER send your child to that hell on earth.. It isn't worth it at all..
Not to mention, when I completed all the medical trades my original certificates were lost!! And before I was kicked out, I was on the permit list to go get one & I was on my way to getting my CNA license ... THANKS AGAIN JOB CORPS YOU SCREWED ME OVER!
